Roiland and Harmon, the latter of whom gleaned remarkable depth from Community despite the limitations of the network sitcom, find a kind of wisdom in it - a fair point about what we can stand to learn when we think we know it all.
It’s an over-the-top, even farcical dynamic, but it’s compelling. He’s the unassuming bulwark that stops the super-genius from becoming the super-villain. Whether the two of them are double-crossing alien scam artists, or exploring the miniature universe that powers a car battery, or trying to escape a planet-wide Purge night, Morty is the voice of reason that Rick listens to begrudgingly to remain humble and sane. He cares about him, and doesn’t like to let him down. Though Rick is stubborn, belligerent and bleakly disillusioned, he has a soft spot for Morty. Naturally, he also needs Morty for a reason he never says aloud: this 14-year-old boy is the mastermind’s conscience - and, in his own modest way, the show’s moral centre.
